The NX Connection is a 4-day event where users
convene for technical presentations, training classes, a partner Vendor Fair,
and to network with fellow Citizens.
The Developer Connection is a Connection-within-the-Conference. This is a 3-day event designed specifically for Siemens PLM Software partners developing on the Siemens platform.
The 3-day Management Connection conference will focus on industry best practices that help achieve global product development and delivery excellence around the use of Siemens PLM Software products.
The Simulation Connection is a Connection-within-the-Conference! This is a 3-day event designed specifically for Analysis and Design Engineers that use Siemens PLM Simulation software.
Featuring Solid Edge
This 3 day connection will focus on intensive training on the upcoming release of Solid Edge. FEA basics and engineering strategies for implementing PDM will also be covered.
The Tecnomatix Connection is a 3-day event for users to convene and to exchange best practice and knowledge on various Digital Manufacturing aspects. Special attention will be given to the collaborative workflows with Product Design and interoperability with shop floor automation and systems following the latest acquisition by Siemens.
The Teamcenter Connection is a 4-day event within the overall UGS Connection Americas conference. The Teamcenter connection is where users convene for technical presentations, training classes, and to network with fellow Teamcenter Connection Citizens.
It is a must to have true users of the software attend this conference. It
is also important to have hands on CAD/PDM implementation leaders attend, so
they can understand the new technology and determine a CAD/PDM implementation
strategy for their business. For instance, it is common for companies to send
its key strategy leaders for CAD and PDM each year, and rotate sending different
users each time from their internal groups.
What are the Costs?
The basic cost for your company consists of registration fees, travel and
living expenses and time away from work. There are various things you can do
to help reduce registration fees like registering early or having your employee
consider making a technical presentation. We estimate roughly that these costs
will be about $1,300-2,300 in direct expenses and about $2,000 in indirect
(salary etc) expense. You must also figure in the attendee's time away from
work which might only affect the department deliverables by less than 2%. You
could consider that their participation cost represents a very small impact
to the engineering budget that that their training cost is generally already
part of their annual budget.
Why You Should Attend
Benefits Gained at the Conference
Enhance Your Knowledge.
The General Sessions are good overviews of the product lines. The Technical
Tracks go into much more detail to keep you up to date with the software.
The goal is to have attendees bring home real solid help from these Technical
tracks, such as best of practice guides and detailed tips that they were
able to implement into everyday use. This is also a good opportunity to attend
sessions to evaluate new modules you may be considering for purchase. The
UGS presentations include such good information as ER updates and software
developments for the future.
Take advantage of the Hands-on opportunities.
Go to the free training sessions offered to work with the latest software developments,
pick up some training on a part of the software you don't use fully, or to
simply evaluate modules before you purchase them. The UGS Demo/Help sessions
provide a one-on-one learning opportunity with a UGS Development representative.
You can visit with a UGS technical representative to discuss whatever is
on your mind. Simply walk-up or schedule in advance with the technical representative
of your choice Bring your issues from work if you like. There will be plenty
of UGS development folks there to work with you. Key people will also be
available from GTAC to help you find out about a recent trouble ticket you
have submitted to them or help you to write one up if necessary.
Use the week to gather REAL User Feedback.
Networking with other users is one of the most valuable aspects of this conference.
Attend every function and try to sit at tables for breakfast and lunch with
people you do not know. Introduce yourself and start conversations on topics
that you would like their feedback on. See if they have solutions to some
of the problems your company is having. You will find friendly users willing
to help you.
Learn about new tools that can help improve your productivity.
Visit the Vendor Trade Fair and take the time and go to every vendor and see
what they have to offer. There might be a product out there that a vendor
has that your company just can't pass up. The cost benefit of what they provide
may greatly outweigh the cost of the product or service. Some vendors will
be of great interest to you and others wont. You may find though in the future
their services might be needed or that you could help fellow employees or
users by giving the vendors name as a reference.
Benefits for When You Get Back
Share the knowledge with your co-workers.
After the meeting, have a post conference meeting with the users to discuss
the lessons learned and give an overview of the presentations attended. Presentations
from the conference will be available for you to share with your co-workers
Hear from our Board Members
John Manderfield - PLM World Chairman
Why am I looking forward to attending UGS Connection 2007?
Dear PLM World Citizens,
I wanted to take a few moments to tell you what I am looking forward to at
this years event.
As a volunteer member of the PLM World user group board, I have been working
with many, many individuals on the details and structure of our event. My
hat is off to everyone involved in this monumental task.
I am a working manager responsible for the creative designs of blow-molded
packaging for my company, so I also need to keep up on my operator skills
on NX. I will be checking out any information on NX5 that may be available
to me. I will attend the training sessions to brush up on my skills. We use
FEA to study our plastic bottle designs and I would like to know more about
the integration of Nastran into my current product development workflow. So
far, I will be the only representative from my company attending, and having
so many options is a plus, but I know I will have to pick and choose. I will
print out the agenda to help build a case that one person can't possibly cover
all of the tracks my company needs to keep up with. I also need to sit in
on Teamcenter Express presentations to see how to enhance our design department
with workflow processes. One benefit I like is the ability to view the presentations
after the event in case I missed anything or if I could not be in three places
at one time. Last year we had a CD and this year we should have all of the
presentations loaded up on plmworld.org shortly after the conference is over.
I will look forward to delivering the opening remarks to kickoff the event.
I don't have the opportunity to speak in front of almost 2,000 colleagues
often. Last year from the podium we had these bright lights pointing to the
stage that tended to obscure my full view, but I knew that a giant sea of
attendees were streaming into the ballroom to see and hear the latest that
UGS has to offer on their open day. Throughout the week, UGS Customers will
deliver 50% of the presentations, in addition to presentations by UGS & PLM
World Partners. This is a perfect balance and shows the incredible volunteerism
evident in our Users, along with the support of UGS & Partners.
I am proud that the attendees to our conference place their trust in us to
deliver a most impactful week. I realize being away for even one day can be
a burden on a team's work load, much less 5 days, so we pack as much content
in that we can. We also will make sure the Cyber Cafe is up and running so
you can catch up on email back home. We are on track to beat last year's attendance
and I hope that you will be able to be a part of our week.

Jon Jarrett - PLM World Technical Director
Why am I looking forward to attending UGS Connection 2007?
Dear PLM World
Citizens,
As your technical director this year I’ve had the opportunity to assist
in putting together over 20,500 minutes of presentations for the upcoming
conference, of which more than 10,000 minutes come from users like you. These
minutes represents over 450 presentations! Think about that for just a minute.
If you consider a regular 40-hour work week, that would amount to 8.5 weeks
of presentations, or over two months of presentations, that we are putting
into a single 4.5 day conference. WOW! So besides the technical content at
the conference, what else should you expect? I’d love to tell you about
a couple of items. Over the past couple of years I’ve heard from several
of you that you’d like to have more opportunities to interact with other
users in your specific industry. This year we’re trying something a
bit different. On Thursday evening we will have an opportunity during specific
industry sessions to talk about industry specific issues, explore new ideas,
and interact with others having similar interests. I believe that it’s
an event that you won’t want to miss! Another change this year, as a
result of your input, will be that our regular parallel breakout sessions
on Monday afternoon will be held in a general session format so all users
can attend. This means that from a high level you will be able to hear about
what’s new from the product leaders in NX, Teamcenter, Tecnomatix, and Velocity Series.
In addition, be sure to check out the new connection events
called, Management Connection, and Developers Connection! The Management
Connection initially
started out as a Tuesday only event, but due to the overwhelming response,
we’ve had to increase it to fill Wednesday also. This event is targeted
to provide users and managers alike, proven ideas focused on industry best
practices, global development, and delivery excellence utilizing the UGS
PLM Product suite. The Developers Connection will be sure to wet the appetite
of the full-time developer, a UGS partner, or even provide the insight
needed
for those who like to just dabble as a programmer in UG Open, Knowledge
Fusion, or other miscellaneous programming tasks.
These new connection events
are open to all attendees. Be sure to check out
all the details at http://event.plmworld.org.
As your technical
leader, I appreciate your support, your comments and suggestions that drive
us to improve the users’ value, not only at the annual conference,
but throughout the year. I look forward to seeing all of you this year from
April 22-27, at Long Beach, California. After all there’s way too many
session for me to attend alone!

What is the Return for My Company
Individual
Your individual employee can gain an increase of as much as 10% in productivity
in just one week if they take advantage of everything we have to offer. The
average "fully burdened" cost for an engineer is $80 per hour.
A 10% productivity improvement would translate into (200 hours x $80) a cost
savings of $16000 for your company. The conference offers opportunities to
gain knowledge by attending technical sessions packed with tips and new information
from peer and UGS presenters. They will also be able to enhance their skills
through hands-on training on current and future software versions as well
as try out new applications and hardware with experts before your company
makes a purchase. The ability to network with other users has been touted
as one of the main reasons for attendance since other users can commonly
be the best source of information and lessons learned stories. Meeting other
users can even lead to them getting involved in a regional users group that
can keep the learning going throughout the year at a minimal cost.
Departmental
Work departments have an opportunity to gain a 10-15% improvement in knowledge
and productivity through their attendee representative(s). Onsite, the attendee(s)
can help to influence the product direction by networking directly with UGS
developers and by participating in the Customer Enhancement (CIP) and Enhancement
Request (ER) sessions. They can take advantage of our equipment setup to
aid in computing infrastructure selection and optimization.
Company Wide
Upon returning to the office, that person or persons can bring back valuable
information from other industries on their best practices and lessons learned
from those further along in their PLM implementation. The attendee(s) can
also cross train other coworkers on the info that they learned by using their
first hand experience, conference proceedings and training materials from
our free classes. They can also put their new information in motion with
data
migration
and transition plans for the future.
The whole company can benefit by learning how PLM can support corporate initiatives
like Lean, Six Sigma etc. They can also discover unique PLM applications that
can impact COGS through integration with enterprise and sourcing MRO, applications.
You will be able to leverage your existing PLM investment to quickly adopt
emerging industry wide initiatives like CMII, ISO, STEP, etc.
